St. James South and Husband’s HeightsTo those of you who live in St. James South and especially in the Husband’s Heights and surrounding neighborhoods please be careful.

There was a meeting at Queens College this evening that lasted for almost 3 hours, the police was engaging the residents in order to address the problem. Quite a large number of residents turned out.
Those of you who live in the area please keep alert and report any strange activities to the police.
- Make sure you keep your homes locked.
- Remove any ladders et cetera from in your yards that criminals can use to enter your homes, whether through windows that are left opened.
Neighbour watch groups are being activated for the purpose of keeping the neighborhoods safe.
There will be other meetings taking place soon to try to find ways to deal with some of the issues.
You can call Stephen Griffith, a police officer, at 1(246)836-1672 for an assessment on your home. After the assessment he would advise you of what you need to do to make your home safer.

Call the police and don’t follow or approach suspects because many could be highly armed.
Patrolling is not advisable by residents.

Have keys for your car and home available and in hand before going in, avoid having to dig through bags to find keys while outside.
Get an anti bump key device for locks- available at Carter’s.
Lock bumping is a technique to bypass locks without having a key for the lock.Makes sure back doors are highly secured they are vulnerable points, keep low hedges so you can see out, look out when dogs bark, other risk reduction strategies.
Treat all weapons carried by an assailant as real and functional.
Cooperate with requests for cash or items, but don’t facilitate, e.g. don’t voluntarily direct the thief to more items or jewelry in another area or the house. Don’t say “Look in that drawer over there for the rest 😊.” Don’t be averse to neighbours who “peep” or who you “think” are malicious, they are usually more helpful in investigations as they see a lot.
However, the strategies being deployed [ in and around the community] may soon bring this situation to and end.
